Spicebox: Tokyo in a Bite + Piece of New York (Closed)
Yelp was where I first stumbled across Spicebox. I was excited to see another Japanese style crepe store open up around my area. I added it to my list of bookmarks but after a while I noticed it on Groupon. I took the opportunity to try out two of the crepes with the offer they had.
For my first visit, I decided on trying the Tokyo in a Bite ($9.50).
Tokyo in a Bite: strawberries, red bean, green tea ice cream, Pocky sticks, whipped yogurt cream, chocolate sauce and cereal.
It was what I saw on Yelp that interested me the most in terms of appearance. Taste wise, it was good, but not mind blowing. The crepe itself had a sponge-y texture and was thicker compared to other crepes I've had before. Along with being sponge-y, the crepe would soaked up the sauces easily which made it more on the mushy side. It also has a floppiness to it which makes it harder to hold up on its own towards the end of eating it. The green tea ice cream was pretty standard, not very strong in flavor, but not bad. The whipped yogurt cream and strawberries gave it a slight tang, but not substantially noticeable. Honestly, as more crepes pop up with green tea ice cream and red bean editions, it is really hard for a specific one to stand out. Overall, it was still a good crepe, but if you've had a lot of green tea and red bean in desserts before, then this may taste pretty standard.
For my second visit, I decided to try the Piece of New York ($10.50).
Piece of New York: blueberries, slice of cheesecake, fruit jam (grape), whipped yogurt cream, Pocky sticks and chocolate sauce.
I was debating between Piece of New York and Field of Ireland, but in the end the cheesecake was what swayed me. It was something I've never seen in a crepe before, therefore I had to try it. The cheesecake itself was not too dense, yet still fluffy. (Not a bad cheesecake to have on its own!) I liked that the blueberries gave it something fresh to it, although I do wish it was maybe something more tart to cut some of the sweetness to it. Halfway into eating it, it was getting a little too sweet for my personal taste. The chocolate sauce felt a little unnecessary because it ended up masking the grape jam. By the time I finished the cheesecake, I ended up not finishing the rest of the crepe because the rest of it was covered in chocolate sauce. Overall, the crepe was good and the idea of putting a slice of cheesecake in crepe was pretty awesome. I think it is worth a try, especially if you have a sweet tooth and like cheesecake.
Other Notes:
Price: $$
The price of crepes range from $5-11, but you can add additional toppings ranging from $0.50 to $2.
Bubble tea, shakes, coffee and other beverages are also offered.
Atmosphere: Casual (limited seating)
There is limited seating in the place. They offer a few benches and chairs if you do want to eat it, but no tables.
There is a window display of the various crepes they offer if you wanted to see what they look like before ordering.
