Bareburger: Grindhouse Burger
Spring break this week! Even though I am not a student anymore, I still get a short break. So that means good time to go out and eat! Being that I am short on cash, I decided to redeem my Groupon I purchased to use at Bareburger. I have been to Bareburger once before, but this was also due to the fact that I had bought a set of Bareburger Groupons. (The deal was for 4 Groupons and each one was worth $10 which could be used for a burger to dine in or take at. Only valid at the Financial District branch if I remember correctly.) I have seen Bareburger before but was never motivated to try it out. I knew they had organic or all natural burgers, but I felt that prices would be high, so I would just pass it by. Thankfully for Groupon, I was able to try it for a small discount.
The previous time I went, I had the Socal Burger ($10.85) which was a turkey burger with aged cheddar, guacamole, pickled red onions, alfalfa on a sprouted bun. This burger did not wow me, even though it was good. The flavors where more mild, but being that this is a lighter, possibly healthier, burger, I didn't expect a party in my mouth. My only issue with the Socal Burger was that the bun on the bottom was too moist and it didn't hold up well. I just got the burger and it was already moist, so eating it felt like it was about to fall apart. Other than that the burger was good. The meat was a little more dry than what I would liked, but overall, it wasn't bad.
So on to the burger I wanted to talk about! This time, I decided to go for the Grindhouse Burger ($12.35) which consist of a bison patty with country bacon, manchego cheese, piquante relish, paprika mayo, green leaf on a brioche bun. When my order came, I was excited because it looked delicious. I took my first bite and was already happy with my choice. This burger had a lot of flavor to it.
At first, I tasted the sweet and tanginess from the piquante relish, along with the smokiness from the paprika mayo. There was also the slight sweetness from the brioche bun, which I love because it is just so delicious. The brioche is a little less fluffy and soft compared to other ones I had, but this one can hold up to the burger and not get saturated with moisture. (There was some patty sliding action, but it was easily fixed.) The bacon was a little hindered because there was a lot of flavor to it already, but it added more meatiness and flavor to the burger. I also liked that it was thick cut and very tender. For the cheese, I didn't really notice much of the manchego, but to be honest, I don't really know what manchego is supposed to taste like. And as for the bison, I don't really know much of a difference compared to beef, but it did taste leaner compared the beef. The burger was cooked towards medium to well, with a slight pinkiness in the center. I would have preferred it to be a little more medium, but maybe because the bison itself is so lean, it was a little less moist than I wanted. Overall, if you want a burger with a lot of flavor, I would recommend the Grindhouse. One thing I would say that I didn't like was that by the end of the burger, I had a lingering smoky flavor in my mouth that was hard to rid off.
I also took the opportunity that day to try their unsweetened Ginger Green Iced Tea ($2.85) which I wasn't too impressed with. I could not really taste the Green tea, so it tasted more like iced ginger tea. It tasted pretty watered down after a while, especially when the ice melts. I would pass on this if I were to go again.
Note:
-The Financial District branch does not serve ALL the burgers Bareburger has to offer.
